Drinking Water.  Sewage Treatment.  These are essential services; services that residents expect.  They also come with large price tags.  How should municipalities finance such infrastructure?  Is there a role for privatization of these services?

ACAP Humber Arm invites you to join our next Coastal Matters presentation where we will hear from special guest speaker Dr. Frank Ohemeng of the School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa.  Dr. Ohemeng has entitled his talk The Politics of

Privatization and its Implications for Service Delivery.  An abstract for the talk can be found below.  ACAP Humber Arm is pleased to be partnering with the Environmental Policy Institute on this offering.

This presentation will take place 12:30 to 1:30pm, Thursday, February 23rd in room 378 of the Arts and Science Building (main building – the one with the swimming pool), Grenfell Campus.  As with all Coastal Matters presentations this session is free of charge and open to the public.  Tea and coffee will be available.

ACAP Humber Arm wishes to thank the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for ongoing support of the Coastal Matter’s Speakers Series.

ABSTRACT

Managing public services delivery efficiently and effectively is at the core of public sector reforms in both developed and developing countries.  The idea is that such reforms will enhance the effective and efficient utilization of scarce resources while satisfying citizens at the same time.  In many circumstance, privatization of such services has been projected as the best mechanism for reforms.  Privatization, however, evokes emotions from both proponents and opponents of the idea.  Yet a clear understanding of the issues involved in privatization is not well understood.  Why has privatization become such a delicate concept and what are its implications for service delivery.
