The Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network (NLEN) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose purpose is to carry out environmental education with the following objective:
to educate members of the public (including members of environmental and other non-profit organizations, students, policy makers, educators, professionals and the general public) through topics such as climate change, protected areas, biodiversity, sustainable forestry, sustainable fisheries, waste management, water conservation, pesticide use and sustainable development.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Public Forums, Workshops & Events: The NLEN organises public forums, workshops and events, usually in partnership with other organisations, to raise public awareness and education on environmental issues in our province.

November 17, 2011 (St. John’s, NL): Climate Policy, Climate Justice: A Panel on the Upcoming UN Climate Change Negotiations. Organised in partnership with: MUN Project Green and the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition.
October 27, 2011 (St. John’s, NL): Public Forum: Genetically Modified Atlantic Salmon — Atlantic Canada is at the center of the global controversy over GM fish . Organised in partnership with the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network and the Council of Canadians (St. John’s Chapter).

September 16, 2010 (St. John’s, NL): The Clean Bin. Presented in partnership with Northeast Avalon Atlantic Coastal Action Program and the Multi-materials Stewardship Board.
3. Education materials: We work with our member groups to create education materials about environmental work in Newfoundland and Labrador.

4. Participating in decisions that affect our environment: We respond to government calls for submissions on policy and legislation, and participate in multi-stakeholder consultations and initiatives.
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership in the NLEN is open to non-profit organisations or associations based in Newfoundland and Labrador that hold environmental conservation and protection as an objective and who support the objective of the Network. Membership is not open to individuals, governments, political parties, for-profit enterprises or associations. Membership is not open to multi-stakeholder groups who have representatives of for-profit corporations or government in their decisions-making body or governing body. Associations, agencies, individuals, for-profit businesses multi-stakeholder groups that do not meet the membership criteria and other groups that wish to support the activities of the Network may become Associates. GOVERNANCE:
The NLEN is governed by a volunteer Steering Committee composed of 6-12 individuals who represent member organisations of the NLEN. The Steering Committee is selected at the NLEN’s Annual General Meeting by a vote of the membership. The NLEN bylaws outline the General Operating Procedures of the organisation.
HISTORY:
The Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network was established in 1990 and maintained a office in Corner Brook through the 1990s. In 2003, the office was moved to its present location in St. John’s (the Gathering Place, 172 Military Road). Membership in the NLEN has grown over the years to approximately 40 organisations at present.
